League of Friends donate equipment to help local people

The League of Friends of the former Paignton community Hospital has donated thousands of pounds worth of new equipment to the Paignton Community Nursing team.

The League’s donation of equipment will assist Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust’s Community Services Team who look after NHS patients in the local area.

The equipment donated by the League includes:

  • A bladder scanner – used to determine the need or not for catheterisation. These are considered an important part of a community team’s equipment as admission to hospital can often be avoided. This can also ensure that a patient’s discomfort and anxiety can be relieved by earlier treatment.
  • International normalised ratio (INR) blood testers – a small portable battery powered device used to check how long it takes for a patient’s blood to clot. It is used to monitor blood-thinning medicines, such as warfarin, which are also known as anticoagulants.
  • Portable digital scales – Accurate, professional digital medical floor scales used for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment.

Corinne Lowe, Chair of Paignton’s League of Friends, said: “We are very pleased to present equipment to the Paignton Community Nurses. All of this equipment enables the staff to obtain instant results saving both patients and medical staff time and for treatment to start immediately.

“The League of Friends continues to support the numerous medical services being delivered within both the Paignton Health and Wellbeing Centre (previously Paignton community Hospital) and many of the Community Medical Services.”

Jill Liardet, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust’s Community Nurse Team Leader for the area, said: “The community nurses are really grateful to the League of Friends for their very generous donation of new equipment. This will mean we are able to treat our patients in a more timely way and we would like to thank for League for their continuing support.”
