Three Rotarians are currently in training ahead of their individual personal challenges aimed at helping Torbay Prostate Support Association to raise the remaining £44000 needed to fund a state of the art Multi-Parametric MRI scanner. The Scanner will be located at Torbay hospital.
Jonathan Edgoose from Tormohun Rotary Club is cycling from Lands End to Torquay. Maldwyn Evans from Brixham Rotary Club is doing the route from Brixham to Lands End on his electric bike whilst Keith Wilby from Preston Rotary Club is covering the same distance but cycling round and round the Torbay Velopark.
Jonathan said “Whilst I am a keen cyclist I have never undertaken a ride of this distance before and the challenge of doing it in one day is a bit daunting but the cause is worth the effort”
Maldwyn said “ My major concern is how many spare batteries I need to carry as up and down hills I will probably only get around 35 miles from one charge”
Keith added “ as I haven’t been on a bike since 1998 the thought of doing over 100 miles on one will certainly push my boundaries”

The 3 guys are hoping their exploits will inspire others to take part in the Charity Bike Ride at the Torbay Velopark on Saturday 15th June jointly organised by 6 Rotary Clubs in Torbay.
Chris Sumner President of Paignton Rotary club who is spearheading the big event on 15th June hopes that riders of all ages and abilities will support the Bike Ride which will be opened at 10.00 by our two local MP’s Kevin Foster and Sarah Wollaston. Chris told me that riders have the option of bringing their own bike, or hiring one, and cycling as many laps of the Velopark as they want or for as long as they want. Alternatively they can use one of the static bikes available on a time or distance basis. There will entertainment, stalls , food and drink as part of the fun day.
There is no entry charge to take part. Chris hopes that everyone will get their friends, family and colleagues to sponsor them.
The Bike Ride takes place on the day before Father’s Day so what a brilliant way to do something positive to help save men from the Cancer that kills more men than any other – early detection saves lives and that’s exactly what the new MRI scanner will do- the sooner the scanner is in place the sooner lives can be saved.
For full details and a sponsorship form please visit rotarybikeride@outlook.com or email kay9sera@gmail.com . If you can’t make it on the day you can still support this great cause by sponsoring one of the cyclists at justgiving.com/campaign/Rotaryride.
